DIY Organic Anti-bacterial all-purpose cleaner recipe with Tea Trea Oil

While growing up, my mom's home remedy for keeping the kids healthy was a teaspoon of bleach in every dish load. Actually, she used bleach for everything! I am probably one of the only people that I know of who absolutely LOVES the smell of bleach and gets a warm and home-y feeling when its aroma fills the air! She also had a jar of lysol in every room (that smell does NOT make me warm and fuzzy) and her cleaning arsenal was filled with TONS of bottles of cleaners.

Well, that was my mom and this is me. There was and is nothing wrong with how my mom raised us but I am taking a more natural and organic approach to life. Not only do I not use those chemical filled cleaners but I also do not need as many different types of cleaners! I have found many natural cleaners actually serve multiple purposes. This is VERY important for this busy and frugal mom of 5!

When I first took my journey into green cleaners, I began by buying the products on the shelves at the store. I was shocked to find lengthy ingredient lists and HIGH prices. If I was going to stay committed to my newly found GREEN lifestyle...I  was going to have to do a little research and a little more DIY.

This brings me to my new favorite cleaner...My Homemade Tea Tree Oil Multipurpose cleaner. I began cleaning with just simple vinegar and water but was really looking for something with a major antibacterial punch for cold and flu season.

Tea Tree Oil is well known for its healing powers. It is effective against bacteria, fungi, viruses, and it is said to enhance the immune system. Take that chemical cleaners -my cleaner is organic, chemical free, and kills the bad guys.

I was also super impressed to find that this miracle cleaner was easy to make and easy on the  budget. Once I made the cleaner.....I found that it could be used everywhere!!! Use this to sanitize and disinfect, clean surfaces, fight mold, heck...even fight insects(repellant)!

Here is how to make it....

Ingredients:
1. water (2 cups)
2. tea tree oil (2 tablespoons)

Can you believe it...that is All!  Mix it together in a spray bottle and you have an anti-fungal/anti-bacterial/deodorizing miracle!

  • Some people will add a capful of Dr. Bronners soap but I haven't found it necessary.
  • You can add some vegetable oil to use on wood
  • Use in conjunction with salt to scrub away stubborn messes and tile!
Here are 10 other uses for that bottle of tea tree oil... Since you will now have it on hand!
  1. Add a few drops to your shampoo to fight dandruff
  2. A few drops will help heal skin infections and athletes foot.
  3. Add a few drops to a vaporizer to clear chest congestion and alleviate breathing problems.
  4. Relieves earaches; mix 1 drop of tea tree oil with 1 tsp. olive oil, drop mixture into the ear
  5. Add a few drops to your vacuum bag to kill dust mites.
  6. Removes ticks
  7. Can be used to prevent and kill head lice
  8. Deters fleas
  9. Add a few drops to your laundry to freshen
  10. Use to remove skin tags

THE LIST GOES ON AND ON!!!

DIY All Natural Self Tanner - Tea for You

I hate to admit it but I am addicted to the tanning bed. For the record, I am not one of those people who goes 3 times a week but I do like to go once a week...set the timer for 15 minutes, plug in the headphones, and zone out. It is like therapy! Some say that it is because of the healthy dose of Vitamin D that the sunless bed's offer but even if that is true, I still worry about the harmful effects of the tanning bed. Don't worry...this is NOT that article.

Now, I know what you are all thinking-or at least those of you who have tried self tanners before are probably thinking the same thing. Most self tanners typically leave streaks and  are an ugly orange color. If you are watching the chemicals you put on your body...don't even turn over the bottle from the store. It is LOADED with chemicals!

This organic and all natural self tanning method is practically foolproof. I have tried a few others that were not foolproof! Now I will caution that this will not get you DARK but it will give you a healthy and radiant glow with a bit of added color.

What you will need:
  • 2 cups Water
  • 4-5 hot tea bags (black work best for more color)
  • Spray bottle or jar and towel
Directions:
I suggest doing this in your bathtub if you are using the spray method. I personally like to do the towel method. Since there is no spray, I can toss on a pair of shorts and a tank top and just apply as I walk around the house doing my normal routine! I wait for it to dry and instantly add another coat!
  1. Make sure you start with clean skin
  2. Boil the water and allow the tea to steep for about 15 minutes
  3. Now, apply the "tanner". If you are doing the spray simply spray liberally and allow to dry. If you are using the towel method, rub the tanner in and allow to dry.
  4. Build your layers based on the glow you are looking to achieve. The more layers...the darker your tan will get!
Now you have a beautiful streak-free organic glow! I will be sharing many other All-Natural and organic beauty tips! Next I will share how to make an organic bronzer powder out of cocoa powder so be sure to follow me via FACEBOOK OR TWITTER to get the updates!

Organic Pest Spray for your Garden - HOME DEPOT COUPON

Yes...This WAS my broccoli!
So I planted a garden this year....I am pretty proud to say that it didn't die...well, at least not by my hand! My boxer actually took care of eating my garden full of peppers, tomatoes, squash, eggplant, and zucchini...but that is a story in itself! Before the demise of my beautiful garden, I returned from vacation to find it becoming snack food for some bugs! This was not how my garden was going down (if I only ad a crystal ball, I could have avoided the whole boxer eating the garden thing!) so I went to the trusty internet to find a solution.

Since I am on a path to getting my family to live organically, I was not about to spray toxins all over my plants! If I expected the foods I bought at the grocery to be organic, I should expect the same out of my own backyard, right?!? So, I did some research and found that pests could be driven away from your garden with a SIMPLE recipe!

ORGANIC GARDEN PEST SPRAY RECIPE

Ingredients
  • 12 garlic cloves (not entire bulbs!)
  • 1 medium sized onion
  • 3 jalapenos - I hear that you can use cayenne pepper or even super hot sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon liquid dish soap
  • 4 cups water
Directions
1. Chop the veggies (or blend in a blender) then toss the veggies in a large pot with the 4 cups of water and bring to a boil
2. Let the concoction boil for a few minutes
3. Pour it into a container while straining out the veggies with a cheesecloth or some type of fabric.
4. Resist the urge to make pasta-or go ahead!
5. Add the dish soap then pour into a spray bottle. Spray directly on plants. (Be sure to test a leaf or two before spraying all over plant to test for burning)

If you wish to avoid boiling, you can simply use hot water and let the concoction sit overnight. I liked the boiling as it made the house smell amazing and it brings out all of the juices of the veggies.

This worked wonders for my garden and immediately cleared up my little buggy issues! It  did not, however, deter my boxer! She LOVES peppers and actually ate 2 entire jalapeno plants INCLUDING the peppers. I guess she is a vegetarian too!

Homemade Dish Soap

Over the last 6 months or so, I have been making a very conscious effort to rid my home of chemicals. Orginally, I looked at the "organic" products on the shelves and found that there was a price to be paid for convenience! So...I began finding ways to make and create my own cleaning supplies and to my surprise...they work! I have previously made my own dishwashing detergent, spray cleaners, laundry soap, etc...but this was the LAST piece to my cleaning puzzle....HOMEMADE DISH SOAP.

After the recent loss of my dishwasher (RIP), I found myself paying almost $4 a bottle for liquid dish soap to avoid the chemical filled ones. That was NOT going to last long! So...I did some digging and found this amazing recipe that is not only frugal for an "organic" cleaner BUT saves you TONS of money even if you are buying a budget brand!

I would say that this entire jar of dish cleaner cost me about 50-75 cents and it was so easy to make!
NOT TOO SHABBY!!! PLUS...these are almost the same ingredients that I use for m homemade laundry soap so they are already on hand--SCORE!

IMAG1138.jpg
Ingredients:
  • 2-1/2 cups boiling water
  • 1 tablespoon Borax
  • 1 tablespoon washing soda
  • 2 tablespoons white distilled vinegar
  • 1/2 cup castile soap ( I grated mine or you can buy liquid)
  • 8-10 drops essential oil (optional)

Here is how easy this is to do.........

1. Place castile soap into mixing container (I grated mine from a bar but you can buy the liquid)
2. Add the Borax and Washing Soda
3. Pour in the boiling water then add the vinegar
4. Add any essential oils you would like to give your soap extra fragrance! I used a bar of soap that already had essential oild in it and my soap smells amazing.

When it begins to cool, pour it into whatever container you would like to use. Over the next few hours, your soap will begin to setup and become more of a gel so it is important to pour it into a squeeze bottle BEFORE this happens!

This really was super easy and only took me about 5 minutes to make..even with grating the soap! It is well worth the time and will save you TONS in the long run!

10 GREAT USES FOR BANANA PEELS

So...I can finally admit it, I have become a "Hippie" ...please don't tell my husband! I am noticing myself- everyday- finding uses for things that I used to throw away. First was lemon peels, then egg shells, the crusts of bread (post coming soon) , and now banana peels have made the list. Just think...before the other day, I thought banana peels were only good for tripping people - and trust me...they really aren't even good for that. Now, I know that the peel has TONS of uses. They contain antifungal, antibiotic and enzymatic properties that are too great to be thrown away!

In addition to being a hippie, I am also CHEAP...I mean "Frugal".  I go to the grocery store almost everyday to scope out the "ripe" fruit selections. I ALWAYS score with bananas. Whenever I find the bananas with this gorgeous red label I buy everything that they have! My grocery store marks these gems down to 29 cents PER POUND..which means I get about 5 bags FULL of bananas for $5! They may not look pretty on the outside BUT the inside is still beautiful! These 5 bags of bananas don't make it very long at my house- my kids will eat them all day long leaving little room for me to use them- but I still get to use them up in some awesome ways: banana bread; smoothies; top them with peanut butter; and even on cereal when I can get to them!

This overusage of bananas leads to one thing....TONS of banana peels sitting in the trash can.  I began to feel badly about this waste so went on a mission to find some uses...here they are in no particular order!

10 WAYS TO USE BANANA PEELS!

1. Splinter removal - If you have a pesky splinter, simply wrap the peel around it and let it sit for a while. The enzymes in the peel should cause the splinter to work its way to the surface!

2. Warts - The peel is also said  to cure warts! Rub the warts each night before bed time with the inside of the banana peel. Over time, your warts will disappear! It is also great for plantar warts.

3. Bug Bites - The bugs...they LOVE me so I will definitely be using this trick more often. Rub the inside of a banana peel over your itchy bits and you will get some relief!

4.  Use them to fertilize plants - I have heard of this being done a few ways...compost heaps, drying them out, etc BUT this is the easiest that I have heard of! Add banana peels to a jar and cover with water. The nutrients from the banana peel will seep their way into the water. Use this nutritious water on your plants and they will love you! I have also heard of  people placing the peels or cut up peels under mulch to be absorbed into the ground.

5. Love butterflies? Add small pieces of peel to your garden and you should see more butterflies!

6. Acne relief - Rub the white side of the peel on any acne you may have - do not rinse it off for at least 30 minutes.  This will bring the trapped oils and junk to the surface and with regular use (shoot for 3 times a day if you can) will eliminate acne!

7. Whiten teeth - Not sure if this one works or not but it is reported that rubbing your teeth for 2 minutes a day with the white side of the peel will whiten and brighten your smile! Some swear by it....I will have to test it out and see what I think!

8. Baking a chicken- Wrap the chicken with a few banana peels and the chicken will remain moist and tender while cooking!

9. Fight Wrinkles and Aging - Bananas are known for their restorative properties and also for fighting age! Regularly applying banana peel to your forehead and cheeks can tighten the skin and reduce wrinkles. It May not a miracle treatment but think of all of the vitamins and minerals you will be imparting to your skin.

10. Household uses - you can also polish silver, shine up leather shoes, and clean the leaves of artificial plants with the banana peel

Do you ave any wacky uses for the banana peel? I would love to hear about it !

How to REMOVE crayon from clothing!

Yep....admit it, it happens to you too!

You are on your last load of laundry and you pull the victorious load out of the dryer only to find that one of your lovely children had placed a crayon in their pocket and THE WHOLE LOAD IS COVERED IN RED WAX!

https://mail-attachment.googleusercontent.com/attachment/?ui=2&ik=f2e5271933&view=att&th=13ed26712b00c880&attid=0.1&disp=inline&realattid=1435846020295557120-1&safe=1&zw&saduie=AG9B_P-kOJCGnsgPvE8aGDtL1_3r&sadet=1369330924651&sads=kzPGqVFKN6UYiHsGown9wxvTCjUThis happens to me frequently but today ...it was down right irritating! We are leaving for vacation tomorrow and this load was all of my oldest son's shorts and shirts that should be sitting safely in the suitcase. I also should mention that I JUST took the tags off and now the clothes look ruined.

Luckily for me...I was able to SAVE the entire load!

Here is how to save your crayon coated items!

1. Put the nice warm "waxed" clothes in your washing machine and set it to the warmest water that you can. I actually put some water on my stove top and boiled some water. It needs to melt the wax so the hotter...the better!

2. Add the following to your load
  • Your laundry soap (I use my homemade detergent but use whatever you usually do!)
  • 1/2 cup of white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup of your dishwashing soap (yep...the stuff you use on your dishes)
3. Let it soak for about 10-15 minutes before starting the washer.

4. Dry as normal!

This TOTALLY removed the crayon from my clothes! If it doesn't get it ALL the first time, repeat!

Good luck, I hope it helps you save some of your clothes!

Greening our Children with Hoppy Bottoms

I LOVE that I started my "Green Journey" with just a few quick fixes and new items and has now turned into a way of life. Through my experiences, I have been given the opportunity to share what I am learning and have had the opportunity to influence others and become a part of a community who not only knows more about the "Green" Lifestyle than I do, but is willing to share best practices and tricks to help me along the way. One such friend is Kelly Gentry from Hoppy Bottoms! If you haven't checked her out....She is a Vegan (Go Kelly) and is FILLED with great eco-friendly information and even runs an "Eco" - baby and cloth diaper consulting business!

She was recently able to attend the "Greening our Children" event and meet the fabulous Jessica Alba! Today, she is going to share with you her experiences AND give you the opportunity to share yours with our ECO FAMILY LINK-UP!
Read all about it then share your Eco friendly tips and posts to be shared on twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest! We look forward to see how you are getting "GREEN"!
Here's more from our Host and Guest Poster----KELLY!

Meet My Hoppy Bottom Buddy - Kelly Gentry!

Yesterday was the 2013 Greening Our Children event to benefit the Mount Sinai Children's Environmental Health Center (CEHC). It was an absolutely amazing experience and great event. The event included the following: 2 Alba for members of press and social media. (I am apologizing in advance for the quality of my pictures. I realized at the event that I am in dire need of a GOOD real camera. At some point I couldn't take anymore pictures- but someone else took them for me so I will add them later.) This is a long post folks but stay with me here, I promise it is worth it (there are pics of Jessica Alba!)
The Day's Events
10am- a little before 10 am I checked in at the event which was scheduled from 10-4. They immediately asked about swiping a credit card for the auction. I gave them a card knowing full well that I would never be able to afford anything! The educational seminars started at 10, the expo opened at 10 and I THINK the silent auction started then also. Lunch was supposed to be at 11:45 or 12. Expo (10am) - The vendors at the expo were promoting toxin free products, green living, eco-friendly products, and organic food.
Honest company table
The Honest Company was the first vendor when you walked in the doors. They displayed their products and were also giving out free lip balm. tower garden One product that really impressed me was Tower Garden. A way to grow your own fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers without soil. This is a great idea for people who don't have yards (or space)! It works by constantly funneling the necessary nutrients throughout the tower and feeding the plants roots. Brilliant! Full Circle was displaying some of their natural, eco-friendly cleaning solutions. The products seem pretty awesome and I am going to check them out. They were giving out magnets with DIY home cleaning solution recipes- of course this will be going on my refrigerator! Roan Skye Healthy Homes is a company that builds green and healthy spaces for children and families. This is very similar to the goal of Hoppy Bottoms (the business). I spoke a little with Annalise Stack the president of the company and she was very passionate about what Roan Skye represents. I hope that I can grow Hoppy Bottoms successfully the way she has grow Roan Skye. It is nice to know that there are more people out there who care about this.
Happy Family (Organic Superfoods) was giving out some free samples. I already know about them, I use their cereals for Eco-Baby. After reading a lot of labels and being really nervous about giving her anything from the store I went with the Happy Bellies cereals, I trust their products. I started out trying to make my own rice cereal (I will post about that disaster another day) and while I do make my own baby food, I decided to buy the cereal. Eco-Baby eats Happy Bellies Oatmeal and Multi-Grain baby cereal.
Expo photos
Babo Botanicals an all natural baby care product company had some great stuff. If you read my blog, you know I swear by The Honest Co. Balm for Eco-Baby but the Babo Botanicals Oatmilk Calendula Diaper Cream might be next in line for me. I was told it was cloth diaper safe (it won't stain - not sure if it will affect absorbency) and the woman at the table rubbed some on my hand. It had a really nice consistency and smelled really, really good. She even said that she uses it on her face sometimes and it works great. She gave me some samples and I will be trying them out soon.
I walked right by the table for Izzi B's Allergen Free Cupcakes but I got to try one during the luncheon. My friend Angela over at Working on Working Mom let me try the vegan Oreo Cupcake (it might actually be called Cookies and Cream) in her sample pack and it was delicious! I hope I get to try more of their products soon.
These are the vendors I spoke to and chose to highlight. For a full list of vendors please click here.
Seminar photos
Educational Seminars also started at 10am or maybe a few minutes after. So once I was done in the expo I walked to the seminars. There were two, and if I am being honest I thought I would be able to attend both but they ran at the same time. I decided to go to the Organic Food for Thought Seminar (read a description of the seminars here). It was incredibly informative. I tried to tweet from inside the seminar because there were a lot of great facts being thrown out but the wireless service wasn't working in the room. I might write more about this another day but here are just a couple of the things mentioned (That I tweeted about):
Greening Our Children twitter
The Silent Auction went on all day long. They had people in very sparkly hats walking around with tablets asking if people wanted to bid. I did not bid on anything and I didn't take pictures (sorry!). I think the auction probably raised the CEHC a lot of money.
Jessica Alba -Then came that moment we were all waiting for - the arrival of Jessica Alba. She was late and we were very impatient. When she did arrive she looked unhappy but I think it was nerves. She looked gorgeous (but I mean, when does't she look that way?) and later in the day when the setting was more intimate she couldn't have been sweeter or more likable. jessica alba arrives When she arrived she met with the people who work at the CEHC and run the event. She took pictures, some with Chirstopher Gavigan who co-founded The Honest Company with her. He is very good looking, I am just going to put that out there... Anyway, once she was done being gawked at we all headed to lunch.
jessica alba 2
Lunch and Awards Lunch was all organic and it was delicious. There was Quinoa, Hummus some vegetables for topping our salads and a few other things. During lunch the keynote speaker gave his speech and Jessica Alba received the Mount Sinai Champion for Children Award. The chairs at the luncheon had some goodies for the guests including a free copy of Jessica Alba's book The Honest Life, the Organic Lip Balm trio from The Honest Co and some stuff from Mount Sinai (pen, notepad). We sat at the table with Jessica Alba's Mom! She was super sweet and such a proud Mom and Grandma. Meeting her Mom really made her so much more of a real person rather than this out of reach actress. If you have read her book, The Honest Life (I just realized I never did a real review of this book!), you will read the story of why she went on this journey to create toxin-free products. I actually heard the story directly from her Mom! So awesome. She also talked about being a grandmother and how Jessica is very family oriented and strict with her kids (she is the grandma who spoils them!). It occurred to me after I left the event that her Mom was there just as that, a proud Mom. Her daughter was receiving an award and she wanted to see it. I think that is wonderful. Dr. Landrigan who gave the Keynote is an AMAZING person who has really been a pioneer in making people aware of the toxins that we, especially children, live among and how they are affecting us. Read about him and his incredible, ground breaking work here. [caption id="attachment_1496" align="aligncenter" width="225"]Jessica Alba, Christopher Gavigan & Dr. Landrigan. Jessica Alba, Christopher Gavigan & Dr. Landrigan.[/caption] Jessica's speech was great. She was so open and honest and admitted to going off script. You could tell that she was a little nervous and very humbled. In general she is very down to earth. jessica alba 3 Jessica Alba
Press/Social Media Meet & Greet The most exciting part of the day was the meet & greet I was able to attend. I will say this, Jessica Alba truly knows her stuff. She (and Christopher Gavigan) had the answers to all of the questions about toxins, allergies, laws and legislation - they knew it all. So if you read her book and assume that someone else did the research and then she put her name on it- you're wrong. She talked about having Dr. Landrigan edit the book for her and being a little embarrassed that this renowned scientist was going to review her book that was written more like a helpful guide for a "girlfriend" (which is very accurate).
I asked her and Christopher Gavigan which 5 products they most recommend from their line and they said that the products in the Discovery Kit (read about the discovery kits here) are definitely the items that Moms want and request. Of course, I had to ask about cloth diapers- they said that they are looking into it but they haven't been able to come up with a way to develop a great cloth diaper that fits in with their innovative product line and business model. I can appreciate that; they don't just want to throw crap out there and they want to keep costs down for their consumers. Totally respectable. They also offered to help my friend Maria over at Tough Cookie Mommy switch over to using more green/toxin free products to try and help her son with his allergies. They are very committed to their cause. Jessica mentioned that not every parent is concerned about the environmental factors that could be affecting their kids; not because they don't care but just because they don't know. And she is right, some parents just don't pay attention (others just don't buy into it despite the scientific evidence), it is too overwhelming. She said part of the reason that the Honest Company Diapers are made with adorable, seasonal designs is because they appeal to the Mom "Who just wants it to be cute" but isn't so concerned with moving away from disposables because of the toxins. This way they are using less harmful products and not even realizing. Now THAT is good marketing. Although, after hearing stories of babies getting chemical burns from "the most absorbent diapers on the market" it is hard to imagine using mainstream disposables. Meet and greet GOC Event My Overall Review
The Event: I would give 8/10 stars. It was a wonderful experience but of course as an event planner I found things that could have been done a little better:
1. Give out an itinerary. Now, because almost everything was supposed to start at the same time I guess they didn't think this was necessary. But I think that there should always be an itinerary for an event like this.
2. Offer the educational seminars at different times or multiple times. I really, really wanted to attend both seminars. But I couldn't because they were both offered at 10am and as far as I know they were ONLY offered at 10am. These are important topics and the seminars are really informative. It would have been great if they were either offered at separate times OR both offered in the morning and afternoon. It may have been planned this way because of Jessica Alba being there or something but in any case I just wanted more!
3. A menu. The lunch was delicious and there was a place card on the table that indicated that everything was organic. That's great. But at an event that promotes green living and recognizes the overwhelming number of people with allergies and special diets, it would have been nice to know exactly what we were eating. I wasn't expecting more choices and what was there was delicious (and healthy) but there were a few things I didn't eat because I wasn't sure if they were vegan.
These are very minor complaints - the event was GREAT. But being an event planner, I had to point these things out.
The Food: 9/10. The food was delicious. I didn't have dessert but it looked really good. Had there been a menu I probably would have given this a 10.
The Meet and Greet: 10/10. It was a very small, personal setting. We were able to take pictures and ask any questions. It was just the right amount of time and I couldn't have asked for a better experience.
I am very grateful I had this opportunity!

Kermit was WRONG!

It is SO EASY Being Green!

I think that the most common misconception about being green is that it is expensive or time consuming. Take it from a cheapskate with no time (nor patience) - being GREEN is easy and actually can SAVE you money! This is my first stab at a "Wordless" Post so there won't be much commentary from here! Just some pictures of how I saved some Green while getting GREEN this week! Enjoy

IMAG0914.jpg5. Since we are new gardeners....we need all the help we can get! I saved our egg shells to sprinkle around our plants to prevent the critters from eating our treasures. It doesn't hurt them,  is safer than spraying chemicals and is cheap! The animals will step on the shells and get spooked but not be hurt!

IMAG0844.jpg6. Art from trash! I LOVE these pizza boxes from Trader Joes. The colors are awesome AND they will make a cute matching pair for my kitchen walls. I will be hitting goodwill for the square frames ...a set of these puppies new would cost at least $40! Check out more of my Trash to Art Projects!

7. Home Beauty Remedies! I washed my face with Apple Cider Vinegar (awesome toner), have a homemade mayo deep conditioner in my hair, and brushed my teeth with a bit of baking soda and lemon!

That's about as "wordless as I get" - I tried...right?!?!
